Innovative conference organised by Peradeniya University
View(s):On August 28-29, the University of Peradeniya organised a multidisciplinary flagship event that included oral and poster presentations on the full range of disciplines with a combination of seven topics. The event was held at its Faculty of Agriculture. The theme of the event was ‘Navigating the Future: A Multidisciplinary Perspective’.
Chief guest at the event was Deputy High Commissioner of India Satyanjal Panday. The event included four keynote speakers: Prof Adam Greenstein from the University of Manchester, Dr Romesh Ranaweera, Chief Analytics and AI Officer at Dialog Axiata and Chairman of the AI taskforce in Sri Lanka, Prof Saman Halgamage from the University of Melbourne and Prof Mahesheran.
“While our main intention behind the event was to allow for networking and research collaboration on an international scale, we also wanted to show case Sri Lanka as a research hub and to do quality research for Sri Lanka,” Event Chair Dr Ruwan Ranaweera, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering said.
The first topic was healthcare, and included innovations in healthcare and wellbeing, while the second was agriculture and veterinary medicine for food security.
The third was engineering and technological innovations for a smart and sustainable future. The fourth was expanding frontiers in basic and applied science and mathematics.
Dr Ranaweera added that fifth topic was transforming business and management for sustainable economic growth. The sixth topic was human and social sciences in a rapidly changing world, while the seventh topic was reimagining education, policy and governance for the 21st century.
He also highlighted that for the IPURSE conference, the university received 631 submissions and that after a thorough review process, 236 oral and 181 poster presentations were selected.
He added that the submissions came from the entire breadth of the academic community from undergraduates to PhD students and professors.
Additionally, the authors initially sent in their abstracts and those papers that were selected were due to their academic merit, wherein they had to follow strict research guidelines and principles in the submission process. All papers had to have an innovative and novel idea for the submission process.
The papers that were of a high quality were allowed for oral and postal presentations. The oral presentations were for a long period while the postal presentations were of a short duration.
Dr Ranaweera said all abstracts were given marks and those that scored higher than 75% had their full paper reviewed, and these will be published in the Ceylon Journal of Science.
IPURSE was the second biggest event after the convocation for the university, he said, and was organised by the University Research Council. The event was funded by the university and private donors.
