Nuwara Eliya MC rejects plan to transfer city water supply to Water Board
View(s):The Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council (MC) has rejected a proposal made at the District Co-ordinating Committee (DCC) meeting to hand over the city’s drinking water supply to the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB).
The issue was initially discussed at the DCC meeting on September 30.
At the subsequent Municipal Council meeting, members pointed out that the MC has consistently provided water at a reasonable price and maintained sufficient supply, even during peak tourist seasons.

Council member Mahesh Ratanasekara pointed out that the facilities should instead be expanded by developing water collection tanks, building a reservoir to collect water from the Lover’s leap fall and improving water sources
Thilni Weerasinghe of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) pointed out that if the Water Board was to provide water, it would be charging a higher rate from the residents.
The meeting was presided over by the Mayor Upali Wanigasekara.
