Election Commission wins local and international awards
View(s):The Election Commission of Sri Lanka (ECSL) received two awards last week , one from an international body and the other from within the country, strengthening its reputation both at home and global level.
On Friday, October 3, the Election Commission was honoured with the award ‘Electoral Commission of the Year’ at the International Electoral Awards 2025 Ceremony in Gaborone, Botswana. Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Rathnayake received the award.

Additionally, at the National ICT Awards (NBQSA) held on October 10, the ECSL won the Silver Medal for its e-services.
Mr. Rathnayake told the Sunday Times, ‘These awards are an initiative to recognise notable contributions in electoral management. We did not submit an application for this category; instead, the judges conducted their own evaluation and selected the winners. To evaluate the process, the judging panel used reports, e-reports, and information from election observer groups.”
He further added, ‘This was the 21st edition of the awards ceremony, and the selection was largely based on how the Commission demonstrated public engagement and participation, raised awareness about community rights, carried out research based initiatives, and undertook efforts to support persons with disabilities.”
Following the awards, the United Nations Technical Election Needs Assessment Mission met with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya in Parliament on October 7. During the meeting, the delegation commended the Election Commission of Sri Lanka (ECSL) for its credible and transparent electoral framework and expressed the UN’s willingness to provide technical assistance for future electoral reforms.
