The University of Colombo’s Faculty of Law will host two regional environmental law programmes this month, bringing together students, judiciary members, policymakers, and academics from Sri Lanka and India to address environmental governance in South Asia.
The initiatives, organised through the Centre for Environmental Law and Policy (CELP) in partnership with the Commonwealth Legal Education Association and Amity Law School, India, include a week-long summer school programme and a policy dialogue focused on regional environmental cooperation.

The press briefing was attended by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo Professor Indika Mahesh
The Indo-Lanka Environmental Law Week will run from October 15-21, bringing together 35 Indian law students from Amity Law School and 15 students from the University of Colombo’s Faculty of Law. The seven-day programme will cover environmental governance, legal doctrines including the Polluter Pays Principle, Public Trust Doctrine, and Intergenerational Equity. Students will participate in lectures, workshops, and field visits to wetland ecosystems, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, and Parliament.
Participants will conduct a community legal awareness campaign in Colombo and deliver group policy presentations on environmental governance. The programme also includes cultural exchange activities and sports to foster collaboration between Sri Lankan and Indian students.
The Indo-Lanka Policy Dialogue on Regional Environmental Cooperation will take place on October 22, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Senate Hall, University of Colombo. Under the theme “Shared Futures, Shared Responsibilities: A Policy Dialogue for Regional Environmental Cooperation,” the event will convene judiciary members, policymakers, and academics from both countries. The dialogue builds on the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) framework.
The session aims to identify mechanisms for promoting environmental sustainability in the BIMSTEC region and will produce a Policy Framework Document addressing environmental challenges specific to the Bay of Bengal area.
Professor Indika Mahesh Karunathilake, Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, leads the initiatives, with academic oversight from Professor N.S. Punchihewa, Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Professor Kokila Konasighe, Director of CELP.
