The use of lunch sheets will soon be completely banned, Central Environmental Authority (CEA) Chairman, Professor Tilak Hewawasam told the Sunday Times.  He said an alternative, non plastic lunch sheet would be introduced.

Professor Hewawasam also noted that the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) mechanism which is included in the amendments to the National Environmental Act (NEC) will be implemented. In the initial phase the EPR mechanism would be implemented regarding PET bottles.

“The gazette notification on charging for shopping bags was a collaborative effort of the CEA and Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA). We are now acting on the National Plastic Action Plan and some of the targets of that plan are being achieved through a project supported by JICA,” Prof. Hewawasm said. Therefore with effect from November 1, shopping bags ( ‘Sili-Sili’ bags) will not be available free of charge.

Accordingly, the Consumer Affairs Authority has issued the relevant gazette notification, which also stipulates that the price charged for shopping bags must be stated clearly at the respective business outlets.

He said the action plan also included the creation of a National Plastic Database, coordinating pilot projects for recycling and awareness building and encouraging the use of alternatives to plastic lunch sheets.
