The Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) has written to Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya highlighting several issues plaguing the education sector that the union wants the government to address in the upcoming 2026 Budget.

The letter, signed by IUSF Convener Madushan Chandrajith, states that the union’s proposals are being resubmitted in a situation where it had not received a proper response after being submitted for consideration during the 2025 Budget.

The proposals include increasing the allocation made towards education to 3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), increasing the Mahapola and Bursary quarterly payments to Rs 10, 000, allocating funding towards new student hostel facilities, allocating funding towards the construction of a Management Faculty at the University of Peradeniya and a Faculty of Computing at the University of Sabaragamuwa, as well as funding towards the promotion of the Open University.

The IUSF has further urged the government to allocate funding towards uplifting schools with minimum facilities, remove the 18% Value Added Tax (VAT) on school stationary items, and make the necessary funding allocations to establish professorial units for the medical faculties at the Wayamba, Moratuwa, Sabaragamuwa and Uva-Wellassa universities.
