“The law is reason, free from passion”, famous words spoken by Aristotle suggest law seeks objective truth and is based on reason rather than emotion. Veritas Lex: Law Week 2025 was a weeklong event organised by APIIT Kandy Campus dedicated to legal teaching and learning on the theme of Resilient Justice: Upholding the Rule of Law in Uncertain Times.
This weeklong celebration of law began on the 11th of August, 2025 which was graced by the presence of chief guest, Mr. Prasantha Lal De Alwis, President’s Counsel and the Principal of Sri Lanka Law College and Senior Attorney-at-law Ms. Surangani Kodithuwakku, representing the Kandy Bar Association. The keynote address by the chief guest was of great value to the event as he spoke of the importance of upholding the rule of law in certain and uncertain times, specifically in the context of Sri Lanka. The panel discussion that followed, with four panelists, chief guest Mr. Prasantha Lal De Alwis PC, Mr. Gamindu Hemachandra Executive Director & Chief Academic Officer, of APIIT Sri Lanka, Dr. Hasuli Perera, Head of Business School, APIIT Sri Lanka and Dr. Chathura Warnasuriya, Head of Law School, APIIT Sri Lanka, was the highlight of the commencement ceremony. The panelists from different disciplines emphasised on the relevance of law in addressing issues across their respective fields in today’s uncertain times.
Law Week 2025 initiated its events with an engaging and interesting mock trial on 11th August. This mock trial was based on a divorce matter involving a custody dispute. All roles of the courtroom were portrayed by law students at APIIT Kandy Campus. The most notable aspect of this mock trial was that it was unscripted, and the students developed their legal arguments for the trial. In preparation of this event, the students visited the Kandy courts in order to create an authentic experience for the audience.
On 12th August, a legal awareness programme was held for schools in Kandy, where internal law lecturers of APIIT Kandy raised awareness among teenagers about their civil and criminal liabilities, online safety, fundamental rights and many other aspects of law that are useful in day-to-day life. On the same date, a legal aid camp was also organised and held at APIIT Kandy premises, where three lawyers from the Kandy Bar Association volunteered to provide legal advice for students and staff alongside our very own lecturers who are also attorneys-at-law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.
On 13th of August, a lecture and a demonstration were conducted by the Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) Unit of Kandy Police Station to give the students valuable insights into criminal investigation, where the officers demonstrated how evidence is collected and handled. This session was organised as part of the Law School’s commitment to promoting practical exposure within legal education and to foster greater awareness and appreciation of the role of forensic science in the justice system.
On the same date, a guest lecture on cybercrime and cyberlaw on the topic “Hacking the Law: Are We Ready for the Cyber Threat?” was conducted by Dr. Thusitha B. Abeysekara, Senior Lecturer, Head of Legal Studies Unit, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. This was another successful event that added valuable insight and prepared students to technological challenges that they may face in the future.
On 14th August, an interactive event in the form of a crime scene investigation simulation was organised. This enabled the students to decipher and solve a crime within a given timeframe. To engage the students further, a movie marathon of legal movies was screened, which was not only entertaining but also educational, offering students insights into the practice and challenges of law.
On 15th of August, the weeklong celebration was concluded with an insightful lecture by the chief guest Dr. Kalana Senaratne, Senior Lecturer, Head of the Department of Law, University of Peradeniya on the topic “Rule of Law Under Pressure: Human Rights in Sri Lanka and Beyond”. Finally, The winners of the inter-school Art Competition, which was organised as part of Veritas Lex: Law Week 2025 were felicitated at the closing ceremony along with the excellent performances at the mock trial and the student committees that worked with devotion.
Law Week 2025 successfully combined learning, dialogue, and engagement, reminding all participants of the vital role of law in shaping society.
