Peradeniya University hosts international research symposium
View(s):The University of Peradeniya hosted the flagship Peradeniya University International Research Symposium and Exposition (IPURSE).
The two day event was on the theme “Navigating the Future a Multidisciplinary Perspective.” The event was hosted by the University’s Research Council.
It brought together academics, industry leaders and innovators to explore cutting edge research across diverse fields. With nearly 400 accepted presentations from a total submission of 600, the event underscored the university’s commitment to fostering global knowledge exchange.
The chief guest for the event was Dr Santyanjal Pandey, Deputy High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka. He delivered an address that emphasised the historical, cultural and educational ties between India and Sri Lanka. Dr Pandey highlighted India’s innovations in space technology, biotechnology, digital initiatives, the indigenous Covaxin vaccine and digital India.
He highlighted the ongoing collaborations between the University of Peradeniya and Indian universities like IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee and the University of Delhi that is supported by the India-Sri Lanka Foundation for joint science and technology projects.
Additionally, Dr Pandey also advocated for more institutional partnerships including joint studies, student exchanges and collaborative innovations to address regional challenges.
Citing the role of inter-disciplinary research in addressing issues like climate change and public health, Dr Pandey encouraged researchers to focus on community needs.
Acting vice chancellor Prof Ranjith Pallegame underscored the seminal role of IPURSE in the university’s knowledge sharing for 2025. He highlighted the 631 submissions in seven tracks and 236 oral and poster presentations.
He emphasised the university’s unique position with nine diverse faculties to lead multidisciplinary collaboration building over seven decades of experience at the helm of Sri Lankan research.
Dr Pallegame said that over 100 million rupees have been allocated as research grants, which is supplemented by external funding. He stressed the importance of the theme of the event in tackling global challenges, health issues and digital transformations through integrated disciplines.
He pointed out the importance of research in improving crop yields, to medical therapies, to preserving cultural heritage, and stressed the need for impact driven efforts that should embrace AI, digital tools and big data.
Guest of honor Prof Adam Greenstein from the University of Manchester UK spoke of the transformative power behind multidisciplinary collaboration especially in medicine and biomedical science.
