Edith Cowan University (ECU) Sri Lanka proudly celebrated the 2024/2025 graduating batch. It was a day that honored not only the graduates who have worked tirelessly towards their academic goals but also the families, mentors, and the university that supported them on this remarkable journey.

The event marked an important milestone for Edith Cowan University Sri Lanka, reflecting the university’s growing presence and commitment to providing direct international degrees as the 1st International University in Sri Lanka. It was not only a ceremony of academic achievement, but it was also a moment of connection between cultures, countries, and communities showcasing ECU’s vision of preparing students to thrive in a globalised world.

Established in 1991 and named after Edith Cowan, the first woman elected to an Australian Parliament, ECU has grown into one of Australia’s most dynamic universities. With more than 31,000 students, including over 7,000 international students from more than 110 countries, ECU is celebrated for its diversity and inclusive spirit. Its four campuses in Joondalup, Mount Lawley, Southwest Bunbury, and Sri Lanka together provide students with a wide range of opportunities, spanning over 250 courses across eight schools.

ECU Sri Lanka offers Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Design, Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security, Nursing Studies Top up, Bachelor of Psychology and Bachelor of Technology (Engineering) Major in Electrical and Foundation and Diploma programmes on par with Edith Cowan College. By offering this spectrum of disciplines, ECU has built a reputation for balancing academic excellence with practical, career-oriented learning.

This year’s ceremony was graced by several distinguished personalities who underscored the significance of the event. Professor Clare Pollock, Vice-Chancellor of Edith Cowan University, emphasized the transformative journey of the graduates and reaffirmed ECU’s vision to remain a forward-looking university. Her Excellency Ms. Lalita Kapur, Acting High Commissioner of Australia to Sri Lanka, attended as the Chief Guest and highlighted the role of education in strengthening ties between Australia and Sri Lanka while Mr. Scott Jones, Group Chief Executive Officer of Navitas, echoed the importance of collaboration between universities and industry in shaping future-ready graduates. Also Mr. Jake Garman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International), along with Mr. David Matthews, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Sri Lanka), extended their congratulations, reminding students of the lifelong community they now join as ECU alumni.

Several other distinguished academic leaders from ECU Perth were also present, including deans, directors, and associate professors from various faculties, reinforcing the deep ties between the ECU Sri Lanka campus and ECU Australia. Their presence highlighted the collaborative spirit that defines ECU’s approach to higher education.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the moment when graduates crossed the stage, symbolising years of dedication and perseverance. Families and friends watched with pride as students collected their diplomas and degrees, a recognition not just of academic achievement but also of resilience, adaptability, and determination.

Adding to the celebratory spirit, Academic Excellence Awards in Gold, Silver, and Bronze were presented to outstanding students who demonstrated exceptional academic performance throughout their programmes. These recognitions served as both encouragement and inspiration, reminding all in attendance of the boundless potential that higher education unlocks.

Beyond the graduates themselves, the ceremony acknowledged the unwavering support systems behind them. Parents, guardians, siblings, partners, and friends filled the auditorium, their cheers and applause resonating with love and pride.

For many, this day was not just about personal achievement but also about fulfilling family dreams, overcoming challenges, and paving the way for future generations. The graduates’ success stories reflected a broader narrative of perseverance, one where education becomes the bridge to opportunity and transformation.

As the ceremony concluded, the focus shifted to what lies ahead. Graduation is not the end of a journey but the beginning of a new chapter. The graduates, now part of ECU’s alumni community, carry with them not only a qualification but also the values instilled by their education including curiosity, integrity, and the courage to innovate.

For ECU Sri Lanka, this graduation was a reaffirmation of its mission. The campus continues to grow, expanding opportunities for students in Sri Lanka and the wider region. By offering international bachelor’s degrees in partnership with Navitas, ECU Sri Lanka ensures that its graduates are equipped to thrive both locally and globally.

The Vice-Chancellor, in her closing remarks, expressed confidence in the graduates’ ability to make meaningful contributions in whichever paths they pursue whether in Sri Lanka, Australia, or beyond. The sentiment was echoed by other speakers, who encouraged the graduates to remain lifelong learners and ambassadors of ECU’s spirit.

As graduates left the hall, clad in their gowns their smiles reflected a hope for careers that will inspire, for contributions that will uplift communities, and for lives that will make a difference. Edith Cowan University Sri Lanka reaffirmed for every graduate who crossed the stage that the ceremony was a reminder that this is only the beginning of a much greater journey.
