University of Vavuniya conducts forum on ‘Emerging Business Trends’

A conference that focused on innovations that spanned various disciplines in business was held at the University of Vavuniya recently.

The theme was ‘Emerging Business Trends: Paving the Way for the Future’ and it was organized by the university, Dean of the Business Faculty Prof Yogaraja Nanthagopen said.

The event was organised in collaboration with professional institutions including the Chartered institute of Personnel Management (CIPM), Association of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing, Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka (IBSL), Responsible Project Managers UK (RPM) and the Project Management institute of Sri Lanka Chapter.

These organisations added immense value and strengthened the academic industry bridge.

The professor said that the event, which started off with the lightening of the traditional oil lamp, national anthem and the Tamizh Thai Vazhthu, was then preceded by a video presentation and a welcome dance. The welcome adress was delivered by V Kajanthy, the conference convener.

This was followed by the inaugural address by Prof Y Nanthagopen, conference chair, as well as a special address by vice chancellor Prof A Athutharajah. The chief guest’s address was given by senior professor K L Wasantha Kumara vice chairman of the University Grants Commission.

A key part of the event was the launch of the conference proceedings followed by key note speakers including distinguished scholars H H D N P Opatha, Senior Professor and Chair of HRM of the Sri Jayewardenepura University, Dr Sammy Ying of the University of New Castle, Australia and Prasanna Sampathkumar the Regional Mentor South Asia Project Management Institute.

The conference also included a panel discussion on the innovative changes that took place in current practices in the fields of accounting and finance, marketing management, human resource and business economics.

The panel discussion was moderated by the Dean Faculty of Management Studies Prof P M P Jayathilake and included imminent scholars such as Prof Lakshman R Watawala, President of CMA, Dr S C Premathilaka Deputy General Manager of SLIM, Immediate Past President of CIPM Sri Lanka and M B Wickremasinghe Director of Member Relations at IBSL.

Prof Nathagopen said the event brought together academia, industry experts and students with the intention of sharing information on the latest challenges, opportunities and advancements that are shaping the business world. The conference also focused on the global business landscape.

He mentioned that the conference had a career guidance seminar on every discipline in the business field for the benefit of university students and A/Level students.

The afternoon technical sessions included the presentations of six research papers in diverse disciplines such as accounting and finance, information technology, human resource management, project management, management, entrepreneurship, marketing and communication. The research is to be included in the university website and the most exceptional will be published in the university journal.
