The location where Thursday’s tragedy on the Ella-Wellawaya road took place, has been the scene of two similar accidents previously. It is a coincidence that the previous ones were also in the first week of September.

In 1996, a group of villagers, most of them farmers from Kurunegala, set off on a pilgrimage to Kataragama after a bumper harvest.

They reached Badulla on the night of September 2, 1996 and the next day they were passing the Rawana Ella, when their bus went down a precipice killing at least 20 and wounding 60.

On September 4, 2002 in another accident a bus belonging to the Bandarawela Depot operating between Ampara and Bandarawela experienced mechanical problems close to Rawana Ella.

The bus had gone backwards and fallen down the precipice killing 23.
