The Attorney General has decided to directly indict suspects arrested over 11 high-profile murders without subjecting them to non-summary proceedings. Those arrested over the murders include police officers and members of underworld groups.

On a request by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the AG has considered the extracts on these particular cases and decided to directly indict suspects involved in these murders in the high court without holding non-summary proceedings in magistrate’s courts.

The CID has informed the AG that investigations regarding these high-profile murders have been completed and that holding non-summary proceedings on these cases before indicting the suspects in the high court would be a time consuming exercise. The CID has also pointed out that if a lengthy period is taken to hear these cases, it could result in witnesses in these cases being subjected to various threats.

The decision has been taken following a recent discussion between senior officials of the Attorney General’s Department led by Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris and a team of CID officers led by its Director, Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekara. Others who took part in the meeting included State Counsel Shakthi Jagodaarachchi and officers from the CID’s Homicide & Organised Crime Investigation Division.

These cases include the attack on a prison bus in Kalutara that killed seven among whom was alleged underworld figure ‘Samayan’, the murder of a doctor in Karandeniya, the murder of an engineer in the custody of the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB), the murder of alleged underworld figure ‘Kohuwala Babi,’ the Elpitiya double murder where police officers are suspects, the fatal shooting of a child during the attempted murder of PNB officer Neomal Rangajeewa, several murders that took place in Rathgama and the recent shooting of alleged underworld figure ‘Ganemulla Sanjeewa’ at the Aluthkade No. 05 Magistrate’s Court.

The AG’s Department has further decided to appoint a special team of officers to consider each investigation folder related to the above murders.
