The Diocese of Colombo of the Church of Ceylon announces with deep sorrow the passing of the Rt. Revd. Kenneth M. J. Fernando, the 13th Bishop of Colombo, at the age of 93, the statement said.

A committed ecumenist, he worked tirelessly to unite the Church in Sri Lanka and reached out to people of all faiths, passionately seeking to build a truly Sri Lankan Church.”
He devoted much of his ministry to reconciliation among ethnic communities during the three decades of civil strife in the country. He also served as Director of the Ecumenical Institute for Study and Dialogue (EISD, Sri Lanka).
His service extended beyond Sri Lanka as well, through his work with the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA), the World Council of Churches (WCC), and the Network for Interfaith Concerns (NIFCON), the statement added.
“Bishop Kenneth was ably supported throughout his ministry by his wife, Chitra, a dedicated educationist, who worked alongside him to uplift the standard of education for children, even during their retirement years in the village of Dampe.”
