Supreme Court Justice S. Thurairaja has been appointed as a member of the Judicial Services Commission (JSC).

He was appointed by the President to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of former Chief Justice Murdu Fernando.

Justice Thurairaja was called to the Bar in 1988 and thereafter joined the Official Bar in 1989 as a State Counsel, where he gradually rose to the position of Additional Solicitor General. In 2016, he was appointed a President’s Counsel before being elevated as the Judge of the Court of Appeal in the same year. In 2019, he was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court.

Justice Thurairaja is the first lawyer from the Indian-origin community to be appointed as an Additional Solicitor General and as a President’s Counsel. Since the inception of the Superior Courts of Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon) in 1802, he is the first judge from the Indian-origin Tamil community to be appointed as a Judge of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.
