The remains of the crashed bus which toppled off from Ella- Wellawaya main road was retrieved and hauled up the mountain by the use of two cranes, police said yesterday.

According to them the effort to haul the bus took around 10 hours, as twisted metal parts snagged on shrubs and bushes and steep stone ledges of the thousand feet deep precipice.

Police added that they utilised two cranes belonging to a private company to haul the remains of the bus. Along with that they employed a team of ten persons to retrieve parts of the bus, load it on to a container trailer and bring it to the Ella police station.

Police said that the remains of the bus would be held at the Ella police station and subjected to investigation by the police and the Motor-traffic Department, the Government Analyst’s department and the Judicial Medical Officer.

The police added that they are awaiting the report of the condition of the bus to determine whether the incident occurred due to mechanical failure or human error.

Meanwhile the blood sample of the bus driver is to be sent to the Government Analyst to check if he had been under the influence of liquor or had used narcotics.
