Elite unit training kicks in for soldier rescuer
View(s):Among the rescuers of the injured and the dead on Thursday, was an off-duty soldier from the Special Forces of the army.
Corporal Madusha Bandara was on leave and was at a Dhamma sermon when he heard of the bus accident.
“I rushed to the location on a motorcycle with my friends and was told that the bus had fallen into the precipice. There was nothing visible and I could only hear the screams,’’ he said. “It was with the help of ropes I was able to go down the precipice as there was no other alternative. When I reached the location I heard some screams ‘beraganna’, ‘beraganna‘ (save us).

“I managed to make a harness and tied the injured person to my body. At this point a rock struck me on my face causing injury. However I managed to bring the person to a location where the other rescuers could take over. Similarly, two others were brought to safety.’’
He said he also retrieved the body of a person who was already dead.
“My training as a SF soldier gave me the courage and strength to help in the rescue,” he said.
The injured soldier was also admitted to hospital.
