President to visit UN and Japan next month on key diplomatic missions

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will undertake two overseas tours in September, one to attend the UN General Assembly sessions in New York, followed by a state visit to Japan.
The President will leave for the US on September 23 and is due to address the UN General Assembly on the 24th, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said.
In his address to the UNGA, the President will outline his government policies, including its foreign policy.
The President will also meet with several other world leaders on the sidelines of the GA, Mr. Herath said.
From New York, the President on September 27 will head to Osaka, Japan, where he will attend Expo 2025. He will attend Sri Lanka Day at the Expo, where the country’s unique offerings in culture, tourism, trade, and investment will be on display.
This will be followed by the start of a state visit to Japan on September 28 on the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. President Dissanayke will hold talks with Prime Minister Ishiba on September 29 and call on Japanese Emperor Naruhito on the 30th.
Minister Herath said the discussions in Tokyo would focus on gaining more employment opportunities for Sri Lankans in Japan and enhancing economic ties.
The government will propose the setting up of a vehicle assembling plant in Sri Lanka, the minister said.
The President will also meet with members of the Sri Lankan community in Japan.
