30 judges in the dock, as JSC initiates disciplinary action
View(s):By Ranjith Padmasiri
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is considering initiating disciplinary action against about 30 magistrates and district judges following complaints and allegations against them.
During the past week, the JSC interdicted five judges. They include District Judge for Moratuwa, Thilina Gamage, and Monaragala Additional District Judge Ranjani Gamage.
The other three interdicted judges were recent recruits to the judicial service. One of them had reportedly contested elections and not disclosed that before he was appointed.
The JSC has taken steps to conduct inquiries based on complaints it received. If the complaint is an anonymous one, a preliminary inquiry is held.
In the event the JSC decides to proceed with the inquiry, a charge sheet is issued and a senior judge appointed to hear the charges.
The Sunday Times learns that among the allegations levelled are favouring parties and acting in a manner that brings the service into disrepute.
Meanwhile, Justice S. Thurairaja has been appointed to fill a vacancy in the JSC, while Badulla High Court Judge Prasanna Alwis has been named as the new Secretary of the JSC. He earlier served as the Colombo Chief Magistrate as well, in addition to serving in Kaduwela and Nugegoda.
The former Secretary Sanjeew Somaratna has been appointed as a judge to the Civil Appellate High Court in Mt Lavinia.
