Esala Perahera draws to a close
View(s):By Shane Seneviratne
The historic Esala Perahera concluded yesterday, with the Day Perahera.
The final Randoli Perahera was held on Friday with the attendance of a large public gathering.
Police were forced to turn away some of the crowds while organisers withdrew some of the elephants midway as the Perahera route was too long.
Heavy security was deployed for the Perahera while President Anura Kumara Dissanayake viewed the Perahera from the Maha Maluwa area in contrast to former leaders who viewed the event from the Queen’s Hotel balcony.
The ceremonial ending of the Perahera took place with Diyawadana Nilame Neelanga Dela Bandara reporting to the President about the conclusion of the event last evening at the President’s House, Kandy. Meanwhile one person who followed the Diyawadana Nilame as part of his security cordon was arrested. The person, a resident from Mahiyanganaya, posed off as a security person and travelled for more than a kilometre before he was detected and arrested.
Usually only the Police and the security of the Diyawadana Nilame follows him in the Perahera.
