View(s):By Ranjith Padmasiri
An anticipatory bail application filed by Ven Athuraliye Rathana Thera, a one-time parliamentarian, has been turned down, and a police search has been launched to arrest him in connection with an abduction.
The anticipatory bail application was turned down by Nugegoda Additional Magistrate Sanjaya Lakmal Wijesinghe.
The Police had launched an investigation on a complaint by the General Secretary of the Ape Janabala Party, Ven Vedihigama Wimalatissa Thera, who claims that he was abducted and his signature was forcibly obtained, enabling Ven Rathana to obtain the National List parliament seat following the 2020 elections.
The additional magistrate held that there were no special reasons to grant anticipatory bail to Ven Rathana Thera.
Courts held that if necessary the monk could surrender to courts and thereafter seek bail if he is arrested.
The Colombo Crime Division on Friday and yesterday searched several locations to
arrest Ven Rathana.
