A new supervision team made up of Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service (SLEAS) officers is to be appointed to monitor schools.

National schools and other schools will be under supervision by the team after they are appointed within the next three months, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha told Education Times.

Around 100-150 members are to be appointed to the team, which will be entrusted to monitor whether schools are carrying out educational activities in keeping with the syllabuses, observe teacher shortcomings, and look into disciplinary issues.

In the event shortcomings are noted regarding teachers, action will be taken by the supervision team to recommend further training or assign them to another school to gain more experience – helping to improve their standards.

Monitoring the school infrastructure and management would be another task for the supervision team. They would look into the facilities in schools and the requirements for infrastructure – especially if class rooms are overcrowded.

In the provinces, a cluster system will be used to monitor schools.

Additional Secretary (School Affairs) Neelamani Malaviaarachchi said that the team should not be considered a flying squad, but instead a team which provides instructions to improve school standards.

She said there was hardly any supervision regarding national schools, and the failure to supervise them had caused issues.

She added that a suggestion had been made to assign part of the team to focus only on national schools.

The supervision team will have principals who have completed at least five years Principal Grade experience, while the others will be SLEAS officers.

The team will be based in the Education Ministry and will visit schools across the country. DWI
