Continuing its support towards the Universal Declaration on Archives and committing to its dispersal, the National Archives of Sri Lanka (SLNA) celebrated International Archives Day on Friday (June 9) at the Auditorium of the National Archives with Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Minister Vidura Wickramanayake as chief guest.

The National Archives of Sri Lanka is the official vault for archives of public authorities and noteworthy private collections, that safeguards records of Sri Lanka’s administrative, legal, and cultural heritage tracing back nearly 400 years.

The Universal Declaration on Archives, which was formulated by the International Council on Archives (ICA) and endorsed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at its 36th General Conference in Paris in 2011, gives a synopsis to the gravity of archives in society, and primarily steers efficient supervision, preservation, and access of archives.

Furthermore, the Department of National Archives carries institutional membership of the ICA.

Archives are records which have been safekept specifically owing to their greater continuing value, according to UNESCO.

Being the central institution committed to preservation and accessibility of Sri Lanka’s documentary heritage, the National Archives discerns the importance of the declaration in putting forward the decisive part of archives in society.

The National Archives reiterates its devotion to preserving the nation’s history whilst assuring its accessibility to all, by supporting the declaration in all possible ways.

The declaration has been officially translated to Sinhala and Tamil languages and was released on Friday (June 9).

“Sri Lanka National Archives is proud to support the Universal Declaration on Archives,” stated Dr Nadeera Rupesinghe, Director-General of National Archives. “The principles espoused in the declaration epitomise our fundamental values of preserving and making the historical records of our nation accessible. By endorsing the declaration, we are reiterating our commitment to these values and demonstrating our solidarity with the global archives community,” highlighted Dr Rupesinghe.

“The National Archives Act No 48 of 1973 identified as a core function of the National Archives of Sri Lanka the preservation of evidential records in public authorities and private collections. Ensuring they remain trustworthy and accessible in accordance with the highest international standards continues to be key priorities for the National Archives,” she added.
