Rain prevents finals at 43rd Junior National Hockey Championship

Sri Lanka Schools ‘A’ and Wennappuwa Hockey Association emerged joint champions at the 43rd Junior National Hockey Championship held at the University of Peradeniya hockey ground for four days. The finals could not be completed due to inclement weather and both teams eventually shared the trophy.

In the third place playoff of the Girls’ segment Defence Services defeated Colombo HA by 4-0. Earlier in the semi-finals Sri Lanka Schools defeated Defence Services 1-0, while Wennappuwa HA thrashed Colombo HA 5-0.

In the Boy’s segment Kandy HA and Wennappuwa HA were declared joint champions after rain prevented any possible play during the final stages of the tournament. In the third place playoff Colombo HA defeated Matale HA by 2-0. Wennappuwa HA overcame Matale HA 4-2 while Kandy HA defeated Colombo HA 2-1 in the semi-finals.

The trophies was presented to the teams by chief guest Imeshi Tennakoon, guest of honour Murad Amirdeen and the President of Kandy District Hockey Association, Dr. M. Maheswaran.
