The Winning Under 16 Team

Gateway College’s winning streak continued as they emerged victorious at the Under-16 International Schools’ Football Championship, played earlier this month. Having recently crowned as the Under-18 and Under-20 champions, Gateway College Colombo gained a triple with a victory over Lyceum International School, Wattala, winning 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at full time in the all-important final.

On route to the final, Gateway defeated Lyceum Ratnapura 3-0 and CIS Colombo 1-0 in the group stage. In the quarter-finals Gateway put on a professional display to defeat Wycherley Colombo by 7-0, before beating the British School in Colombo 3-1 in the semis.

Gateway’s powerful midfield skillfully combined to score 15 goals across the tournament, with Abdullah Hassan and Ahamed Hijaazy, both picking up four goals each. Central midfielder Ahamed Hijaazy was adjudged the Player of the Tournament for his commanding performance across the pitch, whilst Gateway’s Nadal Senapala was awarded the Best Goalkeeper for his assured performance at the back.

The tournament, also saw Sridharan Krbaishdharan of Lyceum Wattala winning the Golden Boot award and the Player of the Final being won by Lyceum’s goalkeeper Vijayaratnam Rishoban.
