Race course grounds being readied for international rugby

By Damith Wickremasekera

The race-course grounds along Reid Avenue, Colombo 7, will soon be designated turf for international rugby encounters, when the Urban Development Authority, under the Ministry of Defence, completes work on the premises. The ground is expected to be ready for use within the next eight months.

The premises will be equipped with the latest facilities for international rugby, including a state-of-the art gymnasium, changing rooms and media rooms.

A jogging track will encircle the grounds. The original race course structures will be preserved and renovated, while boundary walls will be pulled down to give a top-to-bottom view of fine colonial-era architecture. All unauthorised structures on the premises will be dismantled.

There are also plans to operate drive-through eateries run by star-class hotels and food chains that will be open to the public. “This is part of the greening-the-city programme,” an official said. “Trees will be planted to enhance the environment.”
