Wycherley athletic meet - Pegasus flies to victory

The Annual Inter House Athletic Meet of Wycherley International School was held on Monday 24th January 2011, at the N.C.C. Grounds at Maitland Crescent, Colombo 7.

Many months of hard work, training at Track and Field Events and regular practices, saw the students, teachers and parents, display a great deal of enthusiasm. The four Houses namely, Apollo, Athena, Pegasus and Triton showed an immense amount of competitive attitudes, yet, it was done in a spirit of total friendship. They clearly sent the message to all and sundry that sports activities mean not just picking up a string of competitive accolades, but preaching a message of a healthy life style.

Rusiraka Ranasinghe and Shavindi Mendis emerged winners in the 100 metres U/13 Event for boys and girls respectively. Winners in the 100 metres U/17 boys and girls group were Damith Weerasinghe and Shimanthi Gunawardena.

Sulaiman Ummar Farook of Apollo House and Veena Fernando of Triton House emerged 1st in the 200 metres U/13 boys and girls age group respectively. 200 metres Open Event for boys and girls saw Arthithan Selvanayagam and Keyomi Gunaratne as winners. U/9 boys and girls Long Jump winners were Chandula de Silva and Kayori Gunaratne.

In the U/17 boys and girls group, Hubaish Haroon and Cherani Perera came out winners. High Jump U/13 boys and girls event went to Saajid Shafie and Inuli Subasinghe. Putt Shot Open Event for boys and girls saw Methun Shanka Kondage and Divya de Silva as winners. Keshawa Gunaratne and Baghya de Silva were the winners of the Discuss Throw Event for U/15 boys and girls respectively. Javelin Throw Open Event for boys and girls saw Shahan Silva and Akeila Weerasinghe come out winners. Sanjaya Piyasena and Rumana Razick won the 800 metres event and the 1,500 metres event open for boys and girls.

Individual Championships were based on age groups from U/9 to Open for boys and girls. Chandula de Silva, Sesadie Gamage, Nihindu de Silva, Hajaara Maharoof, Mohamed Haroon, Shavindi Mendis, Hakeem Sabry, Senali de Silva, Baghya de Silva, Orexan Gohiklarasah, Thilanee Vijekumar, Ascharye de Silva, Shimanthi Gunawardena, Niroshan Sridharan, Keyomi Gunaratne and Rumana Razick carried away the Championships of their respective age groups.

Hajaara Maharoof won the Best Performance Trophy among the girls for a record timing of 12.03 seconds in the 80 metres Hurdles while Ahamed Hanif had the Best Performance in the boys group in the 60 metres Sprint with a timing of 9.08 seconds.

Decorated House Booths fan and flame much enthusiasm from the children and much labour goes into it. Triton House won the Award for the Best House Corner. Apollo House took away the Awards for the Best Drill Squad and March Past Squad.

The Relay Championship were taken Triton House and Pegasus House for the Juniors and Seniors respectively. The Staff Race and Minor Staff Race saw the kids cheering endlessly. The highlight of the day was the Drill Display titled "Scarf Drill" presented by the children of Grade 3, 4 and 5. It kept the audience in rapt attention for about 10 minutes. It was a beautiful display perfectly synchronizing to the music from the Theme Song of " Slum Dog Millionaire "

Pegasus House carried away the Overall Championship Trophy. This Challenge Trophy was donated by Mr. C.T.A. Schaffter, the Founder Chairman of Wycherley who was also an athlete and Cricketer of repute.
Wycherley teaches them that winning is not everything and competing in the right spirit is the true essence of sportsmanship. As Henry New Bolt said:

"Play up! Play up! And Play the game" is what Wycherley instills in the students.
