Martros 2009 schools athletics on Oct 17

By Bernie Wijesekera

The fourth annual Martros 2009 track and field schools quadrangular meet organized by the Maristonians Sports Association has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2006. This year’s meet will take place on October 17 starting at 9 a.m, at the Maris Stella Grounds in Negombo.

The schools participating in the meet are: Maris Stella College Negombo, Trinity College Kandy and St. Benedict’s College Kotahena, who will take part instead of St. Joseph’s Colombo. The other participant is Royal College Colombo.

Trinity is making a determined bid to promote athletics in the school this year. It must be recalled that DuncanWhite, Sri Lanka’s silver medal winner at the 1948 London Olympics is an Old Trinitian.

The meet will be handled by technical officials of the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA). The late Lakshman de Alwis, a former sprinter, played a dynamic role in promoting this meet.

Mr. P.H.D. Waidyatilleke an IAAF International Technical Official will be the chief guest. Royal are going all out to show their prowess in athletics at this meet and are bound to meet stiff opposition from the hosts and last year’s winners Maris Stella, Trinity and St. Benedict’s.
