Munchee Glucofit Sixes on Friday

The much looked forward to Munchee Glucofit six a side schools cricket tournament organized by the Old Wesleyites Sports Club (OWSC) the only tournament of this nature to have the blessings of the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association is slotted to be held from October 16 to 18 at the Campbell Park.
The sought after event in the schools cricket calendar is being held for the 17th consecutive year and sponsored by Ceylon Biscuits Limited (CBL) for the second successive year.

Navin de Silva a former Sri Lanka national youth captain and the chairman of the organizing committee stated the tournament which began in 1993 with just 23 teams has gone from strength to strength.
The tournament also gives an opportunity for lesser known schools from districts like Polonnaruwa, Nuwara Eliya, Bandarawela, Monaragala, Ampara, Hambantota, Anuradhapura, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Jaffna and Vavuniya to brush shoulders with popular schools in the metropolis.

The organizers have also invited two leading international schools to take part this year and history will be created by Cricinfo the premier cricket website who will be providing live ball by ball updates of all the matches. The Munchee Glucofit Sixes tournament as in the previous year will again be contested by 36 teams and the selection criteria of the tournament are the performance by the team in last year’s tournament and also through invitation on a first come first serve basis.

Royal won the inaugural tournament in 1993 and again in 2001. Nalanda took the trophy on five occasions in 1996, 98, 2000, 2004 and 2005. Kalutara MV has won it twice in 1994 and 2006. The other winners were 1995 – Thurstan, 1997 – Prince of Wales, 1999 – St Joseph’s, 2002 – Lumbini MV, 2003 – De Mazenod and 2007 – Basilica College Ragama, 2008 – Prince of Wales.

The teams participating this year are Mahanama Colombo, Royal Institute, Thurstan, DSS, St Joseph’s, Sri Sumangala Panadura, Gamini MMV Bentota, Moratu MV, Batticaloa District, CWW Kannangara MMV Borella, Prince of Wales, Hambantota District, Trinity, Nalanda, Basilica Ragama, De Mazenod, St Benedict’s, Royal Panadura, Jaffna District, Lyceum International, S. Thomas’ Mt Lavinia, Trincomalee District, Richmond, Zahira Maradana, Holy Cross Kalutara, Wesley, St Peters, Ampara District, Ananda, Polonnaruwa District, Royal Colombo, St Sebastian’s Moratuwa, St Thomas Matale, Dharmapala, Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa and Asoka MV
