The Ministry of Education (MoE) is to organise a competition among schoolchildren to improve their reading habit and be rewarded for it. The competition to be launched in September, coinciding with the month for Literature, will require students to read as many prescribed books as possible, write reviews of the books and forward it for the contest, said Education Minister Akila Viraj Kairyawasam.

The students can win Platinum, Gold and Silver medals, while students who read more than 100 books and write their reviews, will be awarded a foreign tour. They will also be awarded special marks at their Term tests for their performances. The move comes as the government allocated Rs 700 million to print and release prescribed books to some 3,000 schools.

There will be some 12,000 books available for Principals to select and purchase. Minister Kariyawasam said that some schools will receive over Rs 500,000 for the purchase of the books. The allocation of money will be made annually to improve the reading habit, where students will be able to acquire their skills on their own.

Currently there are a number of writers who have submitted their books to the government and got approval for the books.
