Maliyadeva College Kurunegala defeated Science College Mt. Lavinia 29-19, claiming the third promotion position to compete in the coveted Division 1 ‘A’ Rugby next season. Maliyadeva’s victory was significant in the sporting history, as it was the first time in two decades a team from the North Western Province was selected to play in the Division 1 ‘A’ Rugby.

At a time when the development of sports including rugby was lagging behind in outstation provinces, Maliyadeva has set a perfect example to its counterparts across the island by portraying sheer commitment, perseverance and team spirit.

Concerted efforts of the principal W. N. Saman Indrarathne, coach Ananda Kasthuriarachchi, assistant coach Pushpakumara, masters-in-charge Dinesh Bandara, Lasantha de Silva, Samith de Silva and Samansiri as well as the alumni of the school contributed largely towards leading the high spirited Maliyadeva team towards victory.
