Auckland Cricket win one and lose one at Sooriyawewa

The touring Under-17 and Under-14 teams from Auckland, New Zealand won the senior game but lost the junior game to Debarawewa National School teams played at Sooriyawewa last week. In the senior game an all round performance by Niko Weerakoon helped Auckland Cricket Selection overcome Debarawewa NS by 43 runs. Niko smashed 44 off 26 balls with two fours and five sixes and captured four wickets.

Mitchell Bremmer scored 51 off 42 balls with half a dozen boundaries and two sixes to help his team to post a score of 264. Aditha Abhilash captured four wickets. Debarawewa NS anchored by two half tons by Ishan Aravinda and Shehan Malinda could only manage to score 221-9 in their allotted 50 overs.

In the four innings junior game the first innings was limited to 25-overs per-side while the second was limited to 20-overs per-side. Auckland CS batting first scored 85-9 in their first innings and 101-6 in their second innings while Debarawewa NS scored 110 in their first innings and smashed 79 for no loss in 10.2 overs to win the game.

“We have been bringing schoolboy cricket teams to Sri Lanka to give back something to our motherland for what we gained from her to be in this position today,” said Amitha Weerakoon, the Director of Cricket at Takapuna District Cricket Club in New Zealand, who together with Dinesh Burah has been organising cricket tours to Sri Lanka since 2014.
