Machiko Raheem the most outstanding swimmer in the under 19 girls category in action

Group Schools Swimming Championships which concluded at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium swimming pool last weekend.

Mahamaya showed their prowess to become the girls overall champions for a record 16th successive year while St. Joseph’s clinched the overall boys championship for the 11th successive year which is no doubt a great feat in the schools sports arena.

Mahamaya in achieving their record feat accumulated 545.5 points with Ladies College way behind with 328 points and Musaeus College third securing 304.5 points.

St. Joseph’s clinched the title accumulating 631.5 points while Royal Colombo took the second place with 436 points and Ananda coming in third with 362 points.

High standard of swimming was witnessed over the four days with as much as 28 new records being established which consisted of 24 in the swimming events and four in the medley relay events which were held on the final day.

It was celebration for the Raheem family as the two sisters Kimiko and Machiko both of Asian International School bagged the best swimmers award in the under 15 and 19 categories sharing six records between them.

Mathew Abeysinghe also hailing from the Asian International School was adjudged the best swimmer in the under 19 boys while Akalanka Peiris of St. Peter’s, Hiruni de Zoysa of Gateway Colombo and Imesh Chathuranga of DSS were the other top swimmers. The Milo Age Group Schools Championship organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association for the 41st time was sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd for the 21st year.

The chief guest at the closing ceremony was Ranjini Jayakody, Director-General Ministry of Sports with Bandula Egodage, Assistant Vice President Corporate Affairs, Nestle Lanka Ltd gracing the occasion as the guest of honour who gave away the awards.Results:
