Pros and cons of Chandimal captaincy

With Angelo Mathews banned for the first two ODIs of the South African series, a struggling Dinesh Chandimal has been handed the reins of the Sri Lankan cricket team. However, with his recent poor form and erratic play, is Chandimal, who becomes the counry’s youngest ever captain, presently suited for the role?

Given the circumstances we have no one else, although in the last few months he has been in bad form and is looking for runs. This move might be good or bad. It could help him find his form or it could end up putting him under even more pressure. - Avishka Gunawardene (Former national player)

Couldn’t Mahela have been made captain for these few matches? Chandimal is failing at the moment. But he is still very young and will definitely improve as a player when he gains more experience. - Dhanushkha Peiris (Private employee)

I don’t think he is a good choice. As a player he is okay but he is not a leader. He does not have that much international experience. Someone like Dilshan would have been a better option. - Fredrick Tennakoon (Site manager)

I think he is good enough to be captain and he will gain more maturity from the experience. And he is the Vice Captain so it’s natural for him to be made Captain. It’s all about giving players the right opportunities at the right age. Every player goes through a bad patch of form but someone like Chandimal is capable of getting out of it. - Jeewantha Kulatunga (Former national cricketer)

No senior player wants the captaincy and Mathews is banned, so we have a practical problem. But I don’t think Chandimal is the best option. In time though he is talented enough to improve as a player and overcome his problems. - Manjula Nimesh (Lawyer)

Chandimal doesn’t have much experience. He needs time to build himself as a player. We should give him this because I think if he captains the side for a long time he will improve and be a good skipper. - Manjula Thushara (Driver)

Chandimal is a talented newcomer so I think it is fair to give him the captaincy at this point. Plus there are a lot of experienced players in the team to advise him on the field. Mahela is the best example. He got the captaincy when he was very young and he was one of the country’s best captains. - Nimal Dharmasena (Lottery ticket seller)

The captaincy should go to someone who is really talented in every facet of the game and provides an allround contribution. Chandimal still needs to establish himself as a good player. - W. Lal (Businessman)

I don’t think Chandimal is suitable for the job. He is good for the vice captaincy post but not as a captain. His recent performances have not been too good. They should have given it to somebody like Kulasekara. - Yohan Rajapakse (Student)
