Meepawela Amarasuriya National School clinched the Girls’ Under-19 Kabaddi championship at the Southern Province Schools Tournament held at Galle recently. The tournament was organised and conducted by the Southern Province Education Department. The victorious team was coached by M.A.S.C. Munasinghe who had the assistance of Diana de Silva with support also coming in from Nalika de Silva, the teacher-in-charge. The team was captainced by Dilini Deshika. Others who represented the side were Kasuni Wathsala, Nadeesha Sandaruwani, Achini Pushpika, Muthu Tharindu Dasunika, Sashika Anuradha, Wathsala Madhubhashini, Preethika Samanmali, Sameera Sewwandi, Udari Nisansala, Ayodya Hansani and Hashini Maduwanthi. - Text and pic by Gamini Mahadura.

Udayanga, representing Ambalangoda Lions Aquatic, outsmarted many others in contention to win the boys’ championship as his teammate Gishan Ravindu secured second place. Third place was won by Pitiwella Southern Aquatic Sports Club swimmer T.H. Silva.
Ambalangoda Lions’ swimmer Sewwandi topped the girls’ category as she comfortably won the race ahead of teammates Hashini Navodya, who finished second and Wasana Dilrukshi at third. – Text and pix by Gamini Mahadura.

The newly built sports pavilion

Yatagalawatte Maha Vidyalaya Galle received a fully-fledged sports pavilion under the initiative of the Red Heart Project in Norway, which has come forward to help less privilege schools from Sri Lanka. The head of Red Heart, Otto Berge, declared open the completed sports pavilion recently at a ceremony where officials from the Southern Provincial Council, the Education Department of the Southern Province and the school were present. – Text and pix by Gamini Mahadura.
