Blue Star, who regained the top position in Group ‘A’ which they held for some time before Navy Sports Club toppled them, are in danger of losing their grip unless they continue with their winning streak. Navy has all the potential to move back to the top from second position, with them trailing behind the leaders by just two points overall. Colombo FC and Saunders, who are enjoying the one-month break after the end of the first round, are at third and fourth respectively. The top four teams will be back in action from the last week of July but in-between all teams from both groups may have to complete their first round fixtures, if they had any game postponed due to bad weather or for any other reason.

The only changes to take place in Group ‘A’ have occurred in the middle of the points table with Matara City moving up by one position to fifth after registering a hard-fought 2-1 win against bottom seed Super Sun at Kalutara. As a result Java Lane had to give up their position from fifth and moved down to sixth. But Ratnam, Air Force, Negombo Youth and Super Sun, who almost recorded their first wins of the season last weekend, remain unchanged from seventh to the bottom from Group ‘A’.

Solid SC, who has led continuously except for one week from a total of 11 weekends, has become the common rival of the rest of Group ‘B’. They have a clear advantage with 20 points in nine outings, the best tally by any team from both groups with the same number of matches. Army SC, who had the honour of leading the group for just a week, also remains untouched at second while Upcountry Lions and Nandimithra, who remain at third and fourth respectively with 12 points each may engage in a battle to be among the top five. Pelicans, who beat Police SC 2-1 at Maligapitiya last weekend, not only advanced by two slots but are also in the fray along with Upcountry Lions and Nandimithra.

Pelicans’ progress affected Don Bosco and Renown who lost a position each and moved down to sixth and seventh respectively while New Youngs, Police and Kalutara Park remain at eighth, ninth and the bottom respectively. – NA
