Hartley College and Methodist College of Point Pedro proved their undoubted acumen in the boys’ and girls’ brackets respectively of the Under 19 category of the Provincial Schools’ Chess Tourney, organized by the Provincial Education Department of the Northern Province at Hindu Ladies’ College, Jaffna.

742 players from 106 teams took part in the event, which was held under the guidance of S. Sathiyabalan, Deputy Director of Education for the Northern Province. Mr. Premananthan, Additional Director of Education for the Northern Province was the Chief Guest of the ceremony.

The closing ceremony on the final day was made more colorful as the Jaffna District Chess Association (JDCA) arranged a Blitz / Lightening Chess competition among the students in Under 19 and Under 15 categories. Altogether 83 students participated and players were given five minutes each to make their moves and prove their talent. This competition was organized by the Chess Association for Tamils (CATS), Switzerland under the guidance of R. K. Athavan, President of the JDCA and Chief Arbitrator of the event. Kanthaiyah Singam of CATS, Switzerland was the special guest at the event.
