“The Degree at IIHE is the best programme of its kind for management. It includes real life exposure to corporate problem solving and the research based dissertation that moulds you as a professional, enables you to face any challenge in the business world with confidence. This experience was invaluable” says Inoshi Ratnasekera Management Trainee at the Capital Maharaja Organisation Limited, the Batch-top and the Gold Medallist of the latest set of Graduates of the BSc in Business Management programme offered by the Imperial Institute of Higher Education (IIHE). Inoshi’s is just one of the hundreds of success stories you’ll hear from students of the Business Management programme at IIHE.

Established in 1996, the Imperial Institute of Higher Education (IIHE) is one of the pioneers of quality tertiary education institutes in Sri Lanka. IIHE offers undergraduate and post graduate programmes that are both locally and globally recognised. It is in fact the ONLY institution in Sri Lanka directly associated with the prestigious University of Wales, UK to offer BSc (Hons) Degree in Business Management and MBA.

Why IIHE?

All programmes at IIHE are internal degrees from the University of Wales, conforming to the stringent quality standards introduced by the University of Wales and the UK higher education system. University of Wales maintains its high standards and academic results by continuous monitoring and periodic reviews through programmes that are relevant and are on par with the standards set by Quality Assurance Association (QAA) of UK. Each programme at IIHE is monitored by a Moderator from the University of Wales plus two External Examiners neutral members to ensure that UK standards are maintained. A representative from the University of Wales, UK monitors and confirms that all programmes conform to the expected standards.

Global and Local Recognition

The ‘Degree Certificate’ students are awarded on successful completion of the programme is from the University of Wales and is the same as the one received by students who are physically studying at the University of Wales in UK and Graduates become a member of University of Wales Guild of Graduates.

The BSc (Hons) Business Management programme at IIHE has been specially designed to cater to students aspiring to specialise as well as those looking to obtain a general degree. Students can specialise in the areas of Marketing, Finance or Human Resource Management. The selection of relevant electives in year 3 determines their specialism. If a student wishes to hold a general degree he/she can choose electives from all these areas.

“My qualification from the University of Wales helped me to get in to a globally reputed IT consultancy firm even before I completed my degree. I am employed as a Management Trainee as part of the Global Leadership Program at Virtusa and currently, I am project managing the automation module for global travel and logistics of Virtusans. I was employed based on the recognition for the UOW Business Management Degree which is directly awarded from the University of Wales UK” said Saveeta De Alwis (BSc (Hons) Business Management, Management Trainee at Virtusa Corporation. This reiterates the recognition the BSc programme from IIHE has in the market.

Practical and Academic Knowledge

The programme offers students a firm base in Business Management, providing a broader understanding of the functional areas of Business and Management, the environment in which these areas operate addressing the emerging issues as well as learning how to use the tools and techniques available to a manager so that the transition from being a student into the practical world of a work career is smooth.

Year one is specially designed to lay the foundation while progressively in year two and three the emphasis shifts from a lecture based style to guided reading, learner-centred resource-based activities such as case studies, problem solving, workshops and seminars etc.
The programme includes an exclusive final year REAL LIFE PROBLEM SOLVING project (RLPS), where students are divided into groups and are expected to find solution for actual problems and issues affecting HR, Finance, Distribution or Marketing of a particular reputed company. This opportunity not only provides the students exposure into corporate life, but also provides an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and abilities to potential employers.

During the final year, students are expected to complete 15,000-20,000 word research based dissertation, enabling students to integrate their knowledge and skills to address an industrial problem and find a solution based on scientific research methodology. Ashane Ranabahua BSc Graduate who is currently employed as the Assistant Trade Marketing Manager at Reckitt Benckiser, had this to say about the IIHE BSc programme. “My two siblings who followed the degree before me have progressed well in their professions which demonstrate the value of the curriculum. The programme’s balance of academic and practical aspects, prepared me to face the corporate world with greater confidence. The recognition of the UOW degree assisted me to obtain employment in a multi-national company right after graduation.”

In addition to the full-time programme, IIHE now offers a part-time programme as well for working professionals interested in earning a degree while they work.
