Becoming a Healthcare Professional

View(s):

Many parents want their children to become doctors. While this is a noble thought it is important to study and understand the processes and required outcomes. It is a fact that there are many routes to becoming a Doctor but the routes to being able to practise is not that many. Also one has to think clearly why he or she wants to be a doctor. If it is purely for money and prestige, then they are the wrong reasons.

Becoming a doctor is not the only path open to students wishing to pursue careers in the healthcare sector. We at International Scholar Educational Services (Pvt) Ltd (ISES), have the knowledge and expertise to counsel students properly to choose the “best fit” in terms of a career choice. While becoming a doctor is the most favoured option among students and parents, it is not the only option and the best fit for all those who want to get involved in the Healthcare Profession.

However being a Doctor is the most sought after option. Usually a budding doctor needs to have very good results at the GCE Advance Level (A/L) examination to enter a government university. Also to enter private universities in many countries they need to have very good A /L results. However now the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) stipulates a minimum result at A/L s to be able to sit the Examination for Registration to Practice Medicine (ERPM) or better known as the ACT 16 on their return to Sri Lanka. At present this requirement stand at 2 credit passes and 1 Simple Pass. Globally there are many universities who accept students with these results to study in their universities and some of these universities are comparatively highly ranked in the world rankings. While some graduates with low entry qualifications at A / L have done well in the ERPM it is not necessary that graduates with very good A / L results do well at the ERPM. At ISES we can explain the attributes required of a good doctor as well as advise on the universities to suite individual’s requirements.

There may be individuals who want to study Biosciences but not necessarily be a doctor. For those students there is plethora of options to suite individual needs and circumstances. At ISES the counselors have the knowledge and experience to guide students to choose the “best fit” in terms of course and institute.

Healthcare industry has moved a long way forward and some of the thinking and institutions fall far behind. To learn about these new areas and developments we invite you visit us and discuss your needs and career aspirations. There is no charge so nothing lost, drop in for a chat!
