Many students have no idea about the selection of a course of studies when joining a university overseas. They do not get correct career guidance to do so and regret after spending valuable time and money that their choice was not right. In universities of developed countries there are only very limited pre-requisite subjects to enrol in a courses of studies. If a student has the will and confidence in doing a particular course leading to a career that has demand, every effort should be made in pursuing such a career. The objective of this article is to highlight a few careers that are in high demand internationally, worth consideration by prospective students.

Engineering is a career in great demand internationally. All disciplines of engineering have a good demand. The traditional courses in disciplines such as mechanical, civil, electronics, electrical, telecommunications etc are still popular with students who want to “play safe” there are specialisations which are in greater demand than the rest. Mining, Petroleum, Robotics, Chemical (Mineral Processing or Sustainable Energy) are some of these. The myth that Engineering is meant for males only is broken in many parts of the world. In Australia there is a young Muslim girl Ms. Yassmin Abdel-Magied – from Sudan recently graduated and working as an engineer in an off shore oil rig in Queensland. She wears the “hijab” being a Muslim, her job is a fly-in, fly-out one and is one amongst a large number of males at the rig. (Read more about her through a Google search)

Nursing is a professional career in the developed world. Once a person qualifies and obtains the registration, they perform essential services in the health sector. The myth that nurses are meant to do menial jobs and be at the beck and call of doctors is confined to developing countries. This is a profession highly respected, very satisfying and in great demand internationally. Sri Lankan students are now realising the goodness of this career and are enrolling in courses available in top universities. Edlocate successfully enrolled 3 students (Kasun from Ananda College, Shehani from Ave Maria Convent and Asha from Atamie International) who did the preliminary nursing course at IIHS and aiming to graduate from UniSA in Adelaide through the TAFE pathway. We also enrolled Surani from Museaus College at UniSA who too did her preliminary studies at IIHS.

Biomedicine is a great choice if a student is interested in tackling the challenges of healthcare delivery and biomedical research. In a world that no one wants to get sick or age and look ugly but live a healthy life as much as possible, medical research plays an important role and those employed in this field are in high demand. They enter a profession that has unlimited financial resources and excellent rewards. Even world renowned philanthropists like Bill Gates divert his funds to medical research.

Environmental Sciences is yet another discipline in high demand in a world that is ever more conscious about global warming, the need to control emission of CO2 that is damaging the atmosphere, need for sustainable energy sources etc that will definitely be criteria that would shape global futures. Those specialising in related programs will be called upon in great numbers to shape our world through design, management, planning, advising, construction, research and social change.
