Government will soon recruit English Diploma holders to teach English language, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardana said last week.
He said, though measures had been taken to appoint 1,000 English graduate teachers, there were more vacancies to be filled.
Mr Gunawardana was speaking after handing over the three-storied Mahindodaya technical science building to students of Iththepana Dr. Colvin R. De Silva Maha Vidyalaya.
‘More than 1.6 million Lankans earn foreign exchange for this country, and to increase that foreign exchange income, it is necessary to promote the knowledge of foreign languages including English language”, he said.
‘Therefore, within the 1,000 secondary schools redesigning programme, language laboratories have also been built. As there was no proper education system, violence erupted in the North and South, the minister stated. To change this situation, a diversification in the education system has been started, and there is a national requirement for thousands of scholars,” the minister expressed.”
