Sri Lanka’s BMW luxury car registration up 280 %, small cars down

Sri Lanka’s registrations of BMW luxury cars have risen 280 per cent in January 2013 from a year ago following increases to taxes on some vehicle categories while new registrations of small Maruti/Suzuki models dropped 84 per cent, data compiled by motor traders revealed.
They disclosed that registrations of brand new BMW cars rose by 281 per cent to 84 in January 2013 from 22 a year earlier with 82 being 5-Series models.
Registrations of brand new Mercedes cars rose 23 per cent in January 2013 from a year earlier.
New registrations of Maruti-Suzuki cars owned by less affluent citizens fell 84 per cent to 190 in January 2013 from a year earlier, the data showed.
Taxes on small cars were raised twice, drawing protests from Indian automakers that it was targeted at them.
