Prices of medicinal drugs, vitamins under CAA control from Jan 1

The Consumer Affairs Authority in a Gazette Extraordinary has directed the manufacturers and importers of pharmaceuticals and vitamins to mark the maximum retail price on the packs or containers.

They have been also directed to specify the batch number, date of manufacture, date of expiry, the strength and name and address of the manufacturer or the importer.

It said this measure, intended to control the prices of medicinal drugs and vitamins, would come into effect from January 1. The details should be legible and marked in indelible ink.

The manufacturers and importers have also been directed by CAA chairman Rumy Marzook to furnish the CAA with the current retail selling prices of every pharmaceutical or vitamin. They must also inform the CAA any revision of current retail selling prices of any pharmaceutical or vitamin, specifying such revised prices, batch number and effective data prior to making such revision.

Where any brand of such pharmaceutical or vitamin is manufactured and imported subsequent to the date or this direction, the information must be furnished to the CAA before such pharmaceutical or vitamin is made available for sale, the Gazette says.
