Sapugaskanda leak: Probe on possible sabotage

View(s):

The possibility of sabotage in the gas leak at the Sapugaskanda oil refinery will be probed by a three-member committee, Petroleum Industries Minister Susil Premajayantha told Parliament yesterday.

The three-member committee to be appointed by Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Chairman Tilak Collure would consist of a retired judge, a chemical engineer and a retired secretary to the Ministry of Petroleum, he said.

Two people died and seven were hospitalised after they inhaled poison gas at the refinery on Friday afternoon.
The minister told Parliament that the gas leak had occurred when some maintenance work was underway at the refinery’s aviation fuel production section and a leak in a valve had resulted in emitting noxious gas around 3.30 in the afternoon.

By around 8 p.m., the leak was plugged and no harm was caused to the environment, he said.
