Cargo village in Peliyagoda to reduce container traffic congestion in City

The entry of containers to Colombo City will be completely halted from May next year with the construction of a new cargo village where the containers which are accommodated in the harbour will henceforth be accommodated in the cargo village, Ports and Highways Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena said.

Under this project the existing cargo village in Peliyagoda will be expanded with the utilisation of a seven acre block of land after an agreement is signed between the Urban Development Authority (UDA) and the Ministry of Ports and Highways. The agreement states that a four acre block of land owned of the Ministry will be handed over to the UDA while obtaining the seven acre block of land in Peliyagoda to build the cargo village.

“This project was initiated to address the issue of heavy container traffic inside the Colombo Harbour. When a mechanical breakdown or a container is involved in an accident, heavy traffic piles up in the harbour where its efficiency will be minimised with the occurrence of significant economic losses. This project will contribute to avert such losses,” said the Deputy Minister.

Six railway lines will be laid to transport containers from the harbour to the cargo village while a new railway line will be laid from the port to Dematagoda. Containers unloaded from ships will be directly transported to the Peliyagoda cargo village where customers will be able to clear their shipments from the village itself.

The administrative officers of the port will be shifted to one 11-storeyed building to free space inside the port and increase its efficiency, he said.
