Mangala upbraided for vilifying Rajapaksa administration

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena yesterday advised his onetime Cabinet colleague MP Mangala Samaraweera to engage in ‘maithri bavana’ to overcome the affliction of hatred and enmity he felt towards President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

“Mangala Samaraweera should go to a temple and engage in some meditation. It will do him some good,” said Minister Sirisena, who spoke after a hard-hitting speech by the UNP MP, during the Second Reading of the Budget Debate in Parliament.

MP Samaraweera, in his speech, many portions of which were expunged from the Hansard, hit out hard at the Rajapaksa administration, accusing it of tampering with the judiciary, bungling international relations, nepotism and corruption.

Minister Sirisena accused Mr. Samaraweera of speaking with malice. “President Rajapaksa made him Minister of Foreign Affairs and also gave him two additional portfolios, those of Ports and Aviation. But he messed these up, and it was a group of us within the SLFP who told the President to take action against him,” the Minister said.

Public Administration Minister John Seneviratne also condemned Mr. Samaraweera’s speech, as being malicious. “He spoke irresponsibly here. This kind of talk will only strengthen the hands of the enemies of our country,” he said.
