Death on the roads

Incomplete infrastructure projects–especially roads and bridges–continued to claim lives over the past few months. The latest to fall victim to these death-traps was a father-of-four who was travelling to work Friday (16) morning on a motorbike.

Piyadasa Samarasinghe (46) from Elpitiya died when he lost control of the vehicle on the uneven surface and his motorbike fell into gap that was left unprotected. Construction work on the bridge was declared open by Ports and Highways Deputy Minister Nirmala Kotelawala and actress turned politician Geetha Kumarasinghe, who was appointed chief organizer for Bentara-Elpitiya in March this year Residents in the area said work on the bridge had been stalled for more than three months.

“Prior to construction commencing, quarters were constructed for workers and supervisors. The existing bridge was also demolished. “Construction then began at a snail’s pace,” said M.D. Somasiri. a resident.
Many vehicles have been damaged due to the iron bars that are protrude from the construction site, he added.

“On an earlier occasion another person too fell off his motorcycle and was impaled on some of the iron bars. Authorities should take immediate action before more lives are lost,” the resident said.

The original bridge was demolished prior to commencement of construction of the new bridge

During an earlier mishap a man was impaled when he lost control of his motorcycle on the bumpy and unlit surface.

The motorcycle on which the ill-fated father of four travelled on that fateful day and below his shoe on the riverbed.
