Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake’s request for more time to appear before the Parliamentary Select Committee probing the charges in the impeachment motion against her has been turned down, her lawyers said yesterday.

The Select Committee has informed her that she must appear in person on Friday as ordered and then make a request for time, they added.

Meanwhile, Opposition party leaders met yesterday in the Parliament complex to discuss their strategy in the Select Committee proceedings. Yesterday’s meeting came after an Opposition request for a team of independent lawyers to assist the Select Committee on legal issues was turned down by the majority of members.

An earlier request to the Speaker by the Opposition for more members from the Opposition to be on the Select Committee was also turned down.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice Bandaranayake met several appellate court judges and made it clear that she would challenge the charges in the impeachment motion.

“I have already been ruined by the motion. I have no alternative but to defend myself,” she told the country’s senior judges.
