It’s a welcome to the creative minds, the ones who wish to play with colour, texture, pattern, and science and enter the most exciting industry in the world – FASHION. Among fashion education Institutes, Lanka Institute of Fashion Technology (LIFT) has carved an enviable niche for itself. LIFT is earnestly dedicated to the cause of spreading fashion education, and it has the rare distinction of being the first Institute in Sri Lanka, offering courses in Fashion design. The institute is committed to anticipating and fulfilling the ever changing requirements of the fashion industry, and the need of creative applications to the fashion industry.

LIFT offers courses in fashion design where students could begin with the very basics and continue up to the degree level. The Full time courses offered are Advanced Diploma in fashion (2 ½ years ) with the option of specialising in any one of the pathways – Fashion, Textiles for fashion or Footwear and Accessory design. Part time courses offered on Saturdays are The Diploma in Fashion Design (1 ½ years), Diploma in Fashion Marketing (1 year) and Foundation in Art & Design (1 year on Fridays & Saturdays). Students who wish to continue part of their studies abroad have the opportunity to complete their final year of the degree at the University of Northampton – UK and further move on to Masters Levels at the same university. “The option of choosing pathways to specialize in three areas such as Fashion design, Textile design or Footwear and Accessory design is an advantage for students as they have a wider choice to select their future careers according to their talents. LIFT prides itself on encouraging students to have the confidence to express their individuality without feeling the pressure to unnecessarily confirm. Creativity and the desire to challenge what is the ‘norm’, is a passionate belief of the course team, working alongside a strong grounding of commercial awareness, marketing strategies and client/customer needs” says, Niroshani Leanage (Managing Director – LIFT)

Dilshani Yapa and Thidasi Wadage have completing their degree at the University of Northampton this year were selected to showcase their final collections at the UON graduate fashion show at Silverstone – UK in May 2012. “The Wing was the perfect backdrop to the event with graduates having the chance to exhibit their work alongside an amazing customized F1 car in the heart of the world famous Grand Prix Circuit at Silverstone. A few of the Engine Creative team got glammed up and, as event sponsors, were lucky enough to be invited along to the show where we were all genuinely impressed at the quality of the student’s creative work. Our stand-out designs of the night came from Jason George’s medieval inspired men’s collection, Kirsten Millard’s Tinkerbell-esque women’s collection and Dilshanie Yapa’s eye-catching black dress collection.

It was great to see our ‘Making Britain Great’ theme being realised so well on the night and for everything finally to come together after months of hard work! The show gave us an opportunity to catch up with old acquaintances as well as meet new faces, with full credit to The School of the Arts for having the ambition and ability to pull off such a high profile event.” says, Stacy Wood (marketing assistant of engine creative)

“Completing the Advance Diploma at LIFT with required grades, offered me an Internal Scholarship for my study period to the university. The experience I gained at LIFT helped me a lot to move on with my degree and I enjoyed the process of research and development of initial ideas. Studying at Northampton -UK is fantastic because of the different cultural mixture and all the big art galleries that are in the heart of London.”Dilshani Yapa
