Stiff competition, careless mistakes and a whole group of improved students battling for survival seemed the best way to describe the pre quarter finals conducted on a provisional basis where 3,000 spellers were competing for a place in the Top 500, the quarter finals of the all island schools spelling completion “Spellmaster”

The quarter final competition telecast last week is the first of 5 such competitions, where they are drawn in 5 groups of 100 and each week only 20 competitors will qualify to the top 100.

The most interesting feature of the quarter finals is that the competitors begin to compete with their fellow students from all over the country. Thus, for the first competition students representing Northern, Eastern, Uva and Sabaragammuwa, Central and Southern provinces enthusiastically participated in the hope of securing their positions for the semi finals.

As the competition is becoming more competitive, tensed and interesting every participant tried their best to get qualify for the top 100 but unfortunately many of them missed the chance by careless misspelling, especially by getting one letter incorrect or by adding extra letters at the end or in the middle.

In the first round of spelling from the 100 competitors 10 competitors got both words right and automatically qualified for the top 100. Next round was for the 29 competitors who got one word right in the first round who would have to battle for the nest 10 seats. 9 competitors out of the 29 correctly spelt the given word and therefore qualified for the top 100. The battle to select the remaining one seat was not an easy task form the 20 remaining.

The spelling battle went on until they left the competition one by one and finally keeping it to 2 remaining contestants from Gateway College Colombo and Girls’ High school Kandy to battle it out for the remaining position and complete the 20 contestants required for the semi finals.

After a tense and a competitive round that made everyone hold their breath, the contestant from the Girls’ High School secured her place for the semi finals.

Among the 20 contestants who got qualified for the top 100, it was interesting to note that 12 of them were from outstation schools representing the Central, North Western, Northern, Sabaragammuwa and Uva provinces while 8 of them represented the Western Province.

With 80 seats remaining, watch the next episode of Spellmaster this Sunday on Sirasa TV at 6 pm to find out who would be the next 20 spellers to qualify for the top 100.
