‘Battle of Crusaders’ at Kalutara today

The 3rd annual cricket encounter, “Battle of Crusaders” Between the old boys of Holy Cross College and the first XI Cricket Team of Holy Cross College, Kalutara will be worked off today (March 28) at the College Grounds.

This is an annual limited overs encounter where the winning team will receive the Rev. Bro. Francis Silva Memorial Challenge trophy donated by the Executive Committee of ‘92 Group in memory of the first Marist Brother Director of Holy Cross College.

When Holy Cross College started cricket in 1901, it was managed by Catholic priests and in 1978 the Marist brothers took over the administration with that great scholar, the late Rev. Brother Francis Silva as the first director had done yeomen service to develop the school and its sports activities.

A colourful opening ceremony will begin the proceedings of the day with Very Rev. Fr. Dr.Emmanuel Fernando, the new Rector of Holy Cross College as the chief guest at 9.15 am. Last year’s encounter was won by Young Crusaders, but the inaugural battle ended in a tame draw. This time old boys’ team has been strengthened with the services of a former Test player Jayantha Silva and of few former Sri Lankan poolists.
